1 June 2026
Join us as Dr Emmanuel Mbeyagala, Senior Research Officer and Program Leader of the Dryland Legume Research Program at the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), presents findings from on-farm trials conducted with 350 farmers across eastern and northern Uganda.
Date: Thursday 4 June
Time: 14:00–14:30 (CET)
Summary
Using the tricot methodology, Dr Mbeyagala and his team evaluated advanced lines of sorghum, finger millet, cowpea, and pigeonpea, collecting farmer preferences at four key crop development stages, from emergence through to post-harvest. The study sheds light on which genotypes rank highest with farmers, and what drives their choices in dryland cropping systems.
In this webinar, you will learn:
- How the tricot approach was applied to simultaneously evaluate four crops with hundreds of farmers in Uganda
- Which sorghum, finger millet, cowpea, and pigeonpea genotypes emerged as farmer favourites
- How digital data collection tools (ODK and KoboCollect) supported multi-stage preference assessments in the field
- Which traits – including grain colour, marketability, grain size, and stover yield – most influenced farmer rankings
- How large-scale participatory variety evaluation can fast-track crop improvement decisions in semi-arid farming systems
About the 1000FARMS webinar series
Our webinars will highlight the varied projects carried out by our partners, featuring experts, farmers, groundbreaking studies, and discussions on the overall impact of tricot and other farmer-led trials.
The webinars will take place every two weeks, usually on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons (CET), and are open to anyone. The format is a 15-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of open discussion.
