Helping farmers identify crop varieties and technologies most suited to their conditions and engaging them in the testing of new crop varieties is at the heart of the tricot (triadic comparison of technology options) approach.

Now a group of researchers involved in 1000FARMS have published a free e-book covering all aspects of product testing using tricot, titled – “Product testing with users in agriculture and food: Decentralized on-farm evaluation, breeding product validation, consumer testing and other applications using the tricot approach.”

It serves as a comprehensive ‘how-to’ manual, taking users through the ten practical steps of conducting a tricot experiment – ranging from trial design, participant recruitment and package distribution to data collection, statistical analysis and farmer feedback. Additionally, it provides guidance on using the ClimMob digital platform to manage these trials and features real-world case studies demonstrating how the approach has been successfully applied to crops like beans, maize and sweet potatoes across different regions.

The publication is the culmination of many years’ work on the development and refinement of the tricot approach and its software suite, and it could help further scale the tricot approach – thereby empowering farmers and enhancing crop diversity and resilience.
