16 January 2026

Join us for our 20th webinar in the 1000FARMS series. In this session, we’ll hear from Dr Sanni Abdulrahman, socio-economist at the Institute for Agricultural Research, A.B.U., Zaria and Associate Professor at the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Dr Abdulrahman will present findings on how gender dynamics and socio-cultural factors shape farmers’ participation and decision-making in tricot on-farm trials across five states in Nigeria’s Savanna region.

Date: Thursday 22 January 2026
Time: 15:00–15:30 (CET)

Summary

Drawing on data from 900 farmers evaluating improved groundnut, sorghum and pearl millet varieties, Sanni will share the persistent gender inequalities in education, access to extension services and cooperative membership – factors that can limit women’s participation and influence in varietal selection. He will also discuss how restrictive socio-cultural norms affect women’s agency, mobility and access to resources, and what gender-responsive approaches can strengthen equitable participation in participatory breeding and technology adoption.
